ARTICLE: Will Demi Lovato outshine Britney Spears on ‘X Factor’?

Maybe we should be cutting all the Britney Spears attention in half and focusing on Demi Lovato.

With The X Factor returning for its second season Wednesday on Fox and CTV, there has been non-stop talk about the addition of Spears. A lot of that talk has come from her fellow judge, Simon Cowell.

Britney’s meaner than you’d think, Cowell has repeated. He claims the public doesn’t know the real Britney. He says Britney has taken this job really seriously and there have been reports of her having panic attacks and storming off the set.

But I can say this much: In the sizzle reels I’ve seen, it’s the other new judge, Lovato, who’s the sparkplug for this new version of The X Factor.

Lovato and Cowell are the ones who push each other’s buttons. And remembering that Spears is 30 and Lovato is 20, it’s Lovato who’s closest in age to many of the contestants traipsing across the stage, not to mention the majority of audience members.

There’s a fun moment when Lovato and a trio of young singers trade flirty compliments.

“No, no, no, no,” says Cowell, comedically scolding Lovato. “Barrier.”

Lovato shoots right back, “Thanks, Dad,” and subsequently tells Cowell, “You need to take a breath mint if you’re going to get that close to my face.”

Cowell often has referred to Lovato as a “brat,” but he truly means it as a compliment. And maybe a brat is what The X Factor needs to separate it from the gluey glut of reality competition shows.

Lovato has been acting and singing, professionally and successfully, since age 7. But she has admitted she was bullied so badly as a youngster that she developed an eating disorder.

She since has become an anti-bullying activist, and was asked in a conference call with reporters last week how her personal history informs the way she deals with contestants on The X Factor.

“I think bullying is something that’s totally different than criticism,” Lovato said. “Bullying, I think, can be when you’re just harsh, really for no reason. I feel when you’re giving criticism, you’re only trying to help somebody with their performance or their voice or whatever.

“(Being a judge on The X Factor) is everything I thought it would be and more. I always thought it would be so much fun and difficult. But at the same time, you’re in a position that you’re mentoring people. You’re trying to give them the best advice possible so they can be groomed into this pop star that you know they can be.”

Twice during the conference call, Lovato used the term “funner” in a sentence. And not in an ironic way. How can you not love that?

The X Factor needs to be a different show this year. And it’s going to be, not only because of Britney Spears, but perhaps primarily because of Demi Lovato.

Despite going on a rumored date last week after the VMAs, “X Factor” judge Demi Lovato said that she and One Direction singer Niall Horan are just friends.

“There is nothing going on. Niall’s my friend,” she told E! News at a junket for the “X Factor,” which kicks off this week on Fox. Niall and the boys of One Direction got their start on the U.K. version of the show back in 2010 and Demi joins the show this year along with Britney Spears for a revamped second season of the stateside version of the show.

She continued the One Direction’s success has proven that the “X Factor” is a launching ground for real music stars and gives credit to 1D’s manager and her co-judge Simon Cowell for having a keen eye when it comes to spotting talent.

“I’m really happy for One Direction and the success that they’ve had. It just goes to show you how crazy this competition is to making stars and the success that they have,” she said. “He’s a good friend of mine.”

In the end, Demi said that her main man at the moment is the “X Factor” not Niall. She said, “I’m just focusing on my work right now, and that’s pretty much that.”

Fans will get to see her working when the new season of “X Factor” begins on Wednesday, September 12. Demi recently opened up to MTV News about the show and promised, “I think people are really gonna like it. It’s really funny.

She added, “It’s really honest and there’s tons of drama that goes on backstage between the contestants. Which I think is going to be pretty fun to watch … The chemistry’s amazing. I have fun with every single person on the panel. We always joke back and forth. We feel really comfortable together and I really couldn’t ask for a better panel to be sitting together with. They’re just icons. All three of them.”

REMINDER! X-FACTOR is soon to start, who is excited?

Britney Spears and Demi Lovato Dish about the ‘X Factor’

On Monday, Britney Spears and Demi Lovato (and Simon Cowell!) dished about the upcoming season of The X Factor at Fox’s TCA panel.

“I was such a fan of the show and my makeup artist was the artist for Simon [Cowell],” Spears said about her decision-making process to become a judge. “I adore Simon and it was something I wanted to do.”

Lovato underscored that her appreciation for Cowell also brought her to the table. “It such an honor,” she said, after revealing a childhood dream of competing on American Idol. “I think the expertise I’m able to contribute is I’m listening to the radio and I know what my friends like. We’re in our late teens and early twenties and it’s a different thing bringing a younger demographic into the competition.”

Spears added: “I think the show has been really good for me to do to help this talent to come in and achieve their dream. I can relate to them on that level because I started at such a young age.” Cowell joked “Britney is quite mean” before Lovato came to the defense of her co-judge saying, “She’s a sweetheart who is very honest.”

“I think it’s based on who I am and my personality and everyday like. I’m just an honest person,” Spears explained. “I’m actually a huge fun of hip-hop. I love rap. I don’t rap but I appreciate it. I like cabaret music as well, live music and bands.”
