Ellen DeGeneres, Drew Brees, Demi Lovato and actor Avan Tudor Jogia are among the celebrities who have joined a high-school student’s personal fight to get a documentary about bullying seen by as many kids as possible.

Katy Butler, a Michigan high school student who has experienced severe bullying, began a petition at Change.org to get the Motion Picture Association of America to change the R rating of the movie Bully to PG-13.

“It’s an important movie for everyone to see, especially kids,” DeGeneres, 54, said on her talk show last week, with Butler in the audience.

Lovato, 19, appealed to her 6 million Twitter followers: “Please help repeal the R rating on ‘BULLY.’ EVERYONE should be able to see it. Sign the petition.”

Butler’s petition, which is also being officially supported by 20 members of Congress, has drawn more than 280,000 signatures. She delivered more than 200,000 of those signatures to the MPAA’s Los Angeles office last week.

“We’ve got the MPAA’s attention, and with nearly 300,000 signatures and support from celebrities and politicians, there’s now a national movement of people calling on the MPAA to drop the R rating for Bully,” Butler says. “As someone who lived through bullying day in and day out in school, including having my finger broken by bullies, this film is too important to silence with an R rating. Everyone should have a chance to see Bully.”

Demi Lovato is giving fans an insider view of what life’s been like for her since leaving a treatment center last year, documenting it for the MTV special “Demi Lovato: Stay Strong,” debuting Tuesday, March 6, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV.

The special will follow the singer in her most private moments, as she deals with her very public recovery from personal issues, including an eating disorder and cutting. “Stay Strong” shows her confronting these problems while still working on her career, including going back on the road for a tour. Since leaving a trek with the Jonas Brothers in the fall of 2010 to enter treatment, the singer has leaned on the support of her family, friends and devoted fans, known as Lovatics.

Lovato will go into detail about the events that caused her to seek treatment and how she decided to share her personal struggles and journey with the world.

“I wanted to share my story but I knew it had to be honest, it had to be real,” Lovato said in a statement. “I have daily challenges but so do many kids who are struggling to feel comfortable in their own skin. If opening up and sharing my story inspires even one person to stay strong or to get the help they need, I’ve succeeded.”

Fans will get to hit the road with the singer, as well as travel home with her to Dallas, Texas, to see her family. She will also head back to the Illinois treatment center she entered in November 2010.

Lovato first teased the project on Tuesday when she tweeted a photo of her tattooed wrists reading “Stay Strong.” “Lovatics-I wanted to tell you FIRST about a special I worked on with @MTV,” she tweeted. “It premieres March 6th at 10pm!! #staystrong”

Lovato hit the road late last year for a solo trek shortly after dropping her third album, Unbroken. The personal record included the chart-topping hit single “Skyscraper.”

The special will air on MTV channels internationally starting in the spring. For more information, head to StayStrong.MTV.com.

Favorite Pop Artist Demi Lovato Performs At People’s Choice Awards
Singer gave a spirited performance of “Give Your Heart a Break” before accepting her award.

Demi Lovato certainly proved she was Unbroken when she took the stage at the 2012 People’s Choice Awards on Wednesday night (January 11). The former Disney princess dazzled the room with a spirited rendition of her song “Give Your Heart a Break.”

In a bright red dress (with matching red hair), she took the stage and belted out her Unbroken track. Instead of going flashy and over the top, the singer let the song rule the performance and kept it simple, taking the stage with just her band.

After her performance, she accepted the award for Favorite Pop Artist and had many kind words for the fans who helped her beat out the likes of Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Rihanna and Beyoncé.

“Thank you guys so much” she said. “This award is amazing. The nominees that I was up against are people that I look up to and aspire to be one day, and I won this award because of my fans. So I dedicate this to you guys. I love you guys so much. Without you guys tweeting so many times, I wouldn’t be up here tonight. So thank you guys so much. You guys are so amazing.”

“Give Your Heart A Break” is the singer’s second single off her album, which dropped last fall. “I think it’s grown-up, but it’s not too grown-up,” Lovato told MTV News in September. “It’s not tasteless. It’s growing up with my fans. It’s [like] I’m not a kid anymore, but I’m also not a full-grown woman either. So I’m in that in-between stage, trying to figure out where that is. So I’m figuring it out, just like my fans are.”
