No. 7. Demi Lovato
Birthdate: August 20, 1992 (age 19)
Rank Last Year: 8

Why She’s Hot: After launching her career with starring roles in the Disney Channel franchises “Sonny with a Chance” and “Camp Rock,” Demi Lovato dropped out of her spot on the Jonas Brothers tour last fall and entered a treatment facility for an eating disorder and self-injury. Luckily, the pop singer returned from what she described as “the darkest time of my life” with a new album, “Unbroken,” that featured collaborations with Missy Elliott and Timbaland, as well as a lead single, “Skyscraper,” that debuted in the Top 10 of the Hot 100. After experiencing such a harrowing experience at a young age, Lovato remains extremely grateful to her fans, and said in March, “I will never forget the support you guys gave me.”

Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Nirvana Among O Music Award Nominees
Katy Perry, Odd Future, Demi Lovato will also face off on October 31 in categories like Oops! I Did It Online and Fan Army FTW.
Sep 27 2011 9:07 AM EDT
By Gil Kaufman

The list of nominees runs from Justin Bieber to Courtney Love, Britney Spears, Scissor Sisters, Katy Perry, Bjork, Nirvana, Dolly Parton and Snoop Dogg, and that can only mean one thing: It must be time for the O Music Awards again.

When MTV launched its first-annual digital music celebration earlier this year, we promised that it would be like no other awards show, with trophies handed out before, after and during the show, as well as throughout the year.

Sticking to that plan, the O Awards will return for a second round on October 31, with some of the new categories coming courtesy of user suggestions.

Among the five new user-generated categories are “Oops! I Did It Online,” in which over-sharing celebs such as Sinead O’Connor and T-Pain will face off against the Game and Courtney Love; and Best Artist with a Cameraphone, which pits Demi Lovato against Bieber, Young the Giant, Katy Perry, the Deftones and Shiny Toy Guns. The other new categories include Best Web Born Artist (MNDR, Odd Future, the Weeknd), Best Vintage Viral Video (Metallica, Nirvana, Notorious B.I.G., O’Connor) and Best Lyrics Video (Perry, Joe Jonas, Lenny Kravitz, Christina Perri).

Among Gaga’s two nominations are Fan Army FTW — in which she’ll square off with the followers of Bieber, Taylor Swift, Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, Lovato, ICP, Adam Lambert and Tokio Hotel — and Must Follow Artist on Twitter, in which she faces Cher, Snoop Dogg, Blink-182′s Mark Hoppus and Blake Shelton.

The O Music Awards will also honor a number of artists who are really good at this whole online thing, with Bjork, Chris Milk, Girl Talk and the Flaming Lips’ Wayne Coyne vying for the Digital Genius Award.

The other categories include: Best Fan Cover, Hottest Music NILF (think about it), WTF I Love This Award (online craziness), the self-explanatory Too Much Ass for TV award, Most Outrageous Tweet and Best Music Forum. There are also awards coming for Most Innovative Festival, Best Music App, Best Music Hack, Beyond the Blog and Most Addictive Social Music Service, which includes such faves as Spotify, Turntable.fm and Rdio.

The first edition of the awards featured performances by Mumford & Sons, Foster the People, Lupe Fiasco, Matt & Kim and a world record freestyle by Chiddy Bang’s Chidera “Chiddy” Anamege

The O Music Award’s first-time winners included Gaga (Most Innovative Artist and Must Follow Artist on Twitter), Kanye West (Best Tweet), Tokio Hotel’s Aliens (Fan Army FTW), Thirty Seconds to Mars (NSFW Music Video), Aquarium Drunkard (Best Independent Music Blog) and MJJ Fan Community (Best Fan Forum).

The O Music Awards 2 will unfold on Halloween on OMUsicAwards.com, as well as MTV.com, VH1.com, CMT.com, LogoTV.com and MTVHive.com. Fans can vote for their favorites at OMUsicAwards.com.

It’s officially fall, y’all. Which means pumpkin lattes (unnecessary yet impossible to resist), bowls of free candy (dooon’t mind if I do) and a superabundant stream of new albums vying for any remaining space on your iPod. So here at Buzzworthy, our music writers — Tamar Anitai, Nicole James, Jason Newman, Jenna Rubenstein and Brad Stern — harvested 29 of our favorite new and upcoming albums into a fall-friendly guide that’s easier to digest than those weird brown candy corns.

The fall music forecast calls for dance floor fillers like Jason Derulo’s Future History, Patrick Stump’s Soul Punk and Joe Jonas’ Fast Life (two highly anticipated solo missions!), with high chances of comebacks like Blink-182′s Neighborhoods, Evanescence’s self-titled album, Gym Class Heroes’ The Papercut Chronicles II and Demi Lovato’s Unbroken. Expect new music by overachievers too: Britney released Femme Fatale six month ago, but that’s not stopping her from dropping her remixes album next month. And Rihanna will debut her sixth studio album almost a year to the day she released her Loud album, which is still riding high on the charts.

So, without further adieu or belaboring, here’s Buzzworthy’s Fall Music Preview 2011 — 29 new fall albums on our radar that need to be on yours too!

ALLSTAR WEEKEND, All the Way: San Diego pop band Allstar Weekend have struggled recently, with founding guitarist Nathan Darmody exiting the band less than two weeks before the release of their second album All The Way. While the band continues to search for Darmody’s replacement, All The Way features an impressive list of producers and writers, including J.R. Rotem (Rihanna, Britney Spears) and Dan Wilson (Adele). The album’s lead single, “Not Your Birthday,” features rapper Anthony “Anth” Melo. — Jason Newman
Standout songs: “Not Your Birthday,” “Blame It On September”
Release date: September 27

DEMI LOVATO, Unbroken: On Unbroken, her third album, Demi Lovato comes clean, inspires, and experiments with something totally healthy: musical styles. Though Unbroken reflects her time getting sober and getting healthy after entering rehab in late 2010, Unbroken’s both confessional and cathartic. Pulling in Timbaland, Missy Elliott, and Iyaz, Demi goes dance-pop on party tracks like “All Night Long” and “Who’s That Boy” (featuring Dev) while going beneath the surface into personal territory, like on her revelatory, Phoenix-rising redemption song, “Skyscraper.” Demi’s definitely on the right track: Unbroken went to No. 1 within the first HOUR it was released. — Tamar Anitai
Standout songs: “Skyscraper,” “Give Your Heart A Break,” “Who’s That Boy”
Release date: September 20

JOE JONAS, Fast Life: With production credits from Danja (Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears), Rob Knox (T.I., Chris Brown), and Brian Kennedy (Ciara, Rihanna), Joe Jonas’ debut solo album Fast Life has all the ammunition behind it to score himself at least a couple top tens. Breaking away from both his Jonas Brothers sound and squeaky-clean look, fans can an expect an older, wiser, and definitely more mature Joe Jonas on Fast Life. (Um, hi, his “Just In Love” video features a sometimes-shirtless Joe in a hotel room with a French model.) He’s still “Burnin’ Up,” but just in an 18+ way now. — Nicole James
Standout songs: “Just In Love,” “Love Slayer”
Release date: October 11

HONOR SOCIETY, A Tale of Risky Business, Part 2: Although we don’t have too many details about Honor Society’s upcoming album, we do know that the soul-pop act hit the studio with producer Adam Blackstone, so we’re happily anticipating more of the hook-heavy Maroon 5/ OneRepublic vibe we’ve heard on a few of their recent singles, including “Living A Lie.” Their second LP is the follow-up to 2009′s Fashionably Late full-length album.
Standout songs: “Hurricane,” “Living A Lie”
Release date: October 25

The day that you’ve been waiting for is here. The day when we’re finally taking the wraps off of The O Music Awards 2, revealing which nominees will be battling it out in which categories for eternal digital fame.

April’s inaugural O Music Awards, which streamed live from Las Vegas’ iconic Fremont Street, garnered MTV’s second-biggest-live stream audience ever, and featured performances by Mumford & Sons, Foster the People, Lupe Fiasco, Matt & Kim, as well as a world record for the longest freestyle rap by Chiddy Bang’s Chidera “Chiddy” Anamege. The O Music Awards 2 promises to be an even more jam-packed affair. The new, crowdsourced categories are: Oops! I Did It Online, Best Artist with a Cameraphone, Best Web Born Artist, Best Vintage Viral Video and Best Lyrics Video.

And the nominees are just as diverse at the categories. We’ve got everyone from pop princess Lady Gaga to mysterious up-and-comer The Weeknd in attendance (both tied with two nominations), as well as brainy folks like SoundCloud founder Alexander Ljung (for “Hottest Music NILF”) and hot startups, like Turntable.fm (for “Most Addictive Social Music Service”).

Demi Lovato’s latest release, Unbroken, is garnering lots of attention thanks to its catchy tracks and empowering message. Beyond co-signs from Lovatics and a number of celebrities, including Ashley Greene, Sean Kingston and even Joe Jonas, it’s also received great reviews from the hardest people to please: the critics.

But Lovato isn’t paying attention to any of it. She told MTV News she’s more focused on the here and now and the excitement of having a whole new crop of music for everyone to hear. “I haven’t actually looked at any of the critics or reviews,” she said. “So, if they’re good, awesome; if they’re bad, whatever.”

According to reports, despite some stiff competition on the charts from the likes of Tony Bennett and Lady Antebellum, Lovato is still expected to sell pretty big. Billboard.com reports that she’ll likely sell about 110,000 copies of her album, besting her previous chart-topping release, 2009′s Here We Go Again, which sold slightly less with 108,000.

“I’m feeling really excited,” Lovato said. “The album just came out, so we’re really, really excited. And it seems to be doing well, so I’m really, really happy.”

Now that the album is getting some love and she’s readying the release of her next single, “Who’s That Boy,” it seems like a good time to start remixing tracks. “I’d love to hear the feedback on who would want to remix,” she said. “We actually have a remix on the album by Wizz Dumb, and he remixed ‘Skyscraper,’ and it sounds really awesome. You can check that out: It’s on the album.”

If anyone would jump on the album, Lil Wayne might be just the right guy. Lovato has certainly made his track “How to Love” all her own. Of a potential collaboration, she said, “That would be amazing. I’ve never met him in my life, so if I got to be onstage with him, I would just die.”

Demi Lovato popped by VH1 HQ here in New York City earlier this week to promote her new chart-topping album, Unbroken.September’s beloved Posted artist not only took time to answer a bunch of your “Ask Demi Lovato Anything” questions, but blew us away with a brilliant Top 20 Live performance; we’ll have both of these things for you to see very, very soon! Best of all, Demi even lent us her makeup artist Joyce Bonelli, who spilled details about how she achieved Demi’s natural, desert beauty look for the “Skyscraper” video. Now that’s what friends are for! See Joyce’s 10 tips below and grab the glam look for yourself.

STEP 1: DEMI’S SKIN

I always start Demi off by prepping her skin with Perfect Skin.

STEP 2: PRIMER

I used Matt Touch Primer by YSL Beauty to prep Demi’s skin.

STEP 3: FOUNDATION

For thislook, I used High Definition Healthy FX Foundation SPF 15. This foundation provides the perfect finish for HD film, so you look fab on film or television, and in photos!

STEP 4: UNDER EYES

I use Studio Finish SPF 35 Concealer by M.A.C. Cosmetics. Try blending from the outer corners in to keep concealer from settling in fine lines under the eyes for flawless coverage. The stick form makes it easy to use!

STEP 5: SET

I like to set Demi’s gorgeous skin with Loose Setting Powder by Laura Mercier, a translucent powder that mattifies the skin for a soft finish.

STEP 6: BROWS

I filled Demi’s brows in with Brow Zing by Benefit Cosmetics. I always use the lightest shade in brow products for a more natural look.

STEP 7: DEMI’S EYES

I first applied Multi-Acton Concealer by YSL to the Demi’s eye lids. I used three different shades of eyeshadow on Demi, Blaze, Chopper, & Midnight Cowboy by Urban Decay. I first applied blaze all over the lid, then I applied the Midnight Cowboy shade just above the crease and then blended down into the crease. I then added a little Chopper just under the crease and blended up until I reached the crease then blended it together with more Blaze. Limitless Eyeliner in Onyx by SMASHBOX, is what I used to line the inside of the upper and lower lash line as well as on the water lines. For this look I applied a strip lash to Demi’s upper lash lines and finished them off with Plush Lash Mascara by M.A.C. Cosmetics to make them pop. To finish off the eye, I curled her lashes using Shu Uemura eyelash curler.

STEP 8: DEMI’S CHEEKS

To give Demi’s cheeks a touch of color I first applied Blush in Pearly Baby Pink by Make Up For Ever to the apples of her cheeks. Just under the apples of her cheeks, I applied Bronzer in Laguna by NARS to the hallows.

STEP 9: DEMI’S LUMINOUS GLOW

Right above the apples of Demi’s cheeks I applied The Multiple by NARS to highlight her cheekbones.

STEP 10: DEMI’S LIPS

To define Demi’s gorgeous lip shape, I used Lip Liner Pencil in Fantasia by NARS. Lipstick in Barbarella by NARS is what I used to fill in the lip. I finished her lips with Pocket Rocket Lip Gloss in Colin-Fireman by Urban Decay to give a glossy coat.

The loveable, huggable Demi Lovato recently stopped by MTV HQ to promote her newly released album, Unbroken. She talked about why making Unbroken was fun, why she’s “passionate about putting a stop to bullying,” and what she would do if she were U.S. President for a day—her answer was the cutest! How could anyone not love Demi?! Watch her interview below.

By MESFIN FEKADU Associated Press
NEW YORK September 22, 2011 (AP)

As Demi Lovato was spiraling out of control, struggling with an eating disorder, self-mutilation and other issues, there were members of her team who knew that she was hurting herself, but did nothing to stop it.

So, she fired them.

“I’ve had to let a few people go just because I know that my (best) interest wasn’t in their hearts,” she said in an interview with The Associated Press on Tuesday.

Along with her core management, Lovato feels she has good group of people around her now as she rebounds from the troubles that forced her off the Jonas Brothers’ South American tour last year and into rehab. She also left “Sonny With a Chance,” the Disney Channel show that catapulted her to stardom.

The 19-year-old is entering a new chapter in her life. She released her third album, “Unbroken,” this week, a departure lyrically and sonically for the former child star: She sings about champagne on “In Real Life,” there’s the semi-racy tune, “Who’s That Boy” and the R&B-number “My Love Is Like a Star.”

There’s also the lead single and Billboard Top 10 hit “Skyscraper,” which Lovato calls her “cry for help” when she went through physical and emotional struggles.

———

The Associated Press: So things are good with your team now?
Demi Lovato: Now I have people around me that at the sign of anything, they say something and they speak up and they are no longer afraid to say, “Hey, maybe you shouldn’t be doing this” because they’re afraid of losing their job or something like that. I think that’s what goes wrong in a lot of people’s careers, so many people are afraid to say, “This person has a problem” or “This person maybe shouldn’t do this” because they’re afraid of losing their jobs.

AP: Are you still in therapy?
Lovato: Yeah, definitely. It’s a daily thing. It’s a daily battle. I check in with many, many people every single day. I have a very strong treatment team and it’s actually kind of overwhelming sometimes to have that many people just focused on you and your problems.

AP: Is it easy to talk about your issues in public?
Lovato: Well, from day one, when I left the treatment center and when I was in there, we basically said, me and my team, there’s no reason to lie about anything. Things are going to come out anyways, so if you’re honest about it, you beat the tabloids to the chase, and that way there’s no other stupid rumors that are flying around about you of why you’re in there or whatever. A lot of people thought I was in there for drugs and alcohol, and I was in there for an eating disorder and cutting. So as hard as it was for me to come out and say like, “This is why I’m really in here,” I wanted to set the record straight.

AP: Is it harder dealing with rehab and those issues since you are a celebrity?
Lovato: I don’t think it’s harder. To me, it’s more rewarding for me to speak about these issues and know that I’m possibly making a difference in someone’s life. And it holds me more accountable. I feel like I’m held more accountable to stay healthy now because now I’m a role model to young girls to not have eating issues and to not say, “Hey, it’s OK to starve yourself” or “It’s OK to throw up after your meals” — that’s not OK.

AP: How does it feel to release your third album?
Lovato: It feels so good. I’m so excited. It’s like giving birth to a child, kind of. It’s like I’ve created this thing. I feel like it’s my little baby and here I am showing it to the world, so I feel like in a way it’s my birthday.

AP: How has your voice changed over the years?
Lovato: I’ve seen my voice change a bunch — especially over this past year because I’m not doing things that are damaging my vocal chords that much anymore. Occasionally, I won’t get my rest or I’ll drink too much coffee here and there, or too much Red Bull; Red Bull is not good for your voice and I drink it all the time — things like that. In the past it was more serious issues that were affecting my voice and now I’m not dealing with those anymore.

AP: Your live performance of “Who’s That Boy” was a little racy. What’s it like as you transition out of your Disney character persona?
Lovato: For me it was the transition from rock-pop to more R&B and I think I got that pretty nailed on the dot, and I’m really proud of that song. It’s my next single and it is a little bit more racy. I say “damn” in it (laughs). I’m getting older and the performance onstage was definitely, it was a bit sexier, but it wasn’t too much. I don’t want to scare off my fans. At the same time my fans are growing up with me, and I don’t want to go way over the top.

AP: This album is very danceable, but there are ballads, too. Why did you decide to lead with “Skyscraper”?
Lovato: I had to release it because I wanted to talk about the issues and the journey that I’ve been on, and I didn’t want to just like come out with a dance song right off the bat, and people are like, “Wait. What? I thought she was just in rehab and then this happened and now she’s coming out with a dance song?” It didn’t make sense. So I wanted to have a song that explained it, and was emotional enough.

By Jocelyn Vena (@jocelyn1212), with reporting by Amy Wilkinson

‘Jessie’ actress Debby Ryan applauds the latest album by her fellow Disney star.

Demi Lovato has certainly caused quite a splash this week, with her album Unbroken making Lovatics out of previous skeptics, thanks to personal lyrics and powerhouse vocals.

The 19-year-old Lovato has said the album is her way of “figuring it out” as she makes the transition from Disney princess to 20-something pop star. That theme speaks to fellow Disney star Debby Ryan.

“I’ve listened to a bit,” the “Jessie” star told MTV News. “Toby Gad, with whom she produced ‘Skyscraper,’ he wrote that with [singer] Kerli [Kõiv]. I like her stuff as well. They wrote it and produced it, and when they placed it with Demi, it was amazing, and it’s absolutely empowering and really, really strong.”

The track and the album totally mirror who Lovato is as a person, Ryan said. “The thing about Demi, she’s always able to show her vulnerability and her strength and her whole personality in her music and definitely her voyage,” she said of the comeback kid. “I think she’s in such a cool place of finding her sound and revamping her sound and working with amazing people.”

Bottom line is Ryan feels the album is “very impressive” thanks to its production value and guests like Missy Elliott and Timbaland, to name a few. She also had kind words for Gad, whom she worked with on the theme song for her show “Jessie,” so she gets how he’s able to weave some musical magic. “I admire him a lot,” she said. “He knows his way around the pop realm.”

What do you think of Demi’s new album? Let us know in the comments below!
