“Demi Lovato; Ashley Tisdale”
Tuesday, July 28th 2009, 4:00 AM

The battle of the sexes starts young.

The first scars show in the chords and cries of teen pop, where the planet’s cutest youths square off against each other to present very different views of love…

Demi Lovato — star of the Disney show “Sonny With a Chance” — refuses to solely act the usual vengeful rocker on her second CD, “Here We Go Again.”

Instead, she brings in more ballads, some moderately sophisticated (!).

A song she co-wrote with quasi-legit singer Jon McLaughlin apes the jazzy-balladry of Jason Mraz, while “Catch Me” rates as her “Eleanor Rigby,” fired by stiff, mournful strings.

While Lovato’s debut found her co-writing with the Jonas Brothers, on the new one she roped in John Mayer for a cut. By teen pop standards, that’s a serious upgrade.

Lovato earns it with vocals that have more nuance than most of her ilk. While she still keeps things safe with lots of formula faux rockers, we should give the 16-year-old credit for putting out a CD that, by this world’s standards, reads as a leap…

The several thousand shrieking girls in the audience might not have noticed, but things weren’t going smoothly for Demi Lovato during her concert at the Prudential Center here last month. For the first few minutes, as she sang and pranced across the stage, not a sound came from her microphone. Later she flubbed lyrics on a few songs. On Lovato’s face, barely masked by the grin of the longtime pro, were persistent flashes of concern, discomfort and fear.

It was the night before her latest film, “Princess Protection Program,” was to make its debut on the Disney Channel, where Lovato, 16, is an ascendant star, the heiress apparent to the tween-pop crown.

But where in the not-too-distant past that would have meant she was an automaton of joy and relatability, Lovato is already proving to be far more intriguing, and far less predictable.

About midway through the show came “Catch Me,” one of the best songs on her new album, “Here We Go Again” (Hollywood), and the only one for which she receives sole writing credit. Like those that preceded it, it threatened to become something of a shambles.

But as Lovato eased into the lyric, intimate and measured, a calm spread over her. Her shoulders eased. Rather than overwhelm the crowd with razzle-dazzle, she turned inward, and for a few moments looked as if she might prefer to be playing in a coffeehouse somewhere, where the lights weren’t nearly as bright.

“Catch Me” was “written by myself in my room,” Lovato had said earlier that day, taking a breather at the Trump International Hotel in Manhattan. “Those songs mean more to me than when we’ve got two weeks to finish an album and I’m with three different writers.”

“Demi Lovato’s Nickname For Miley Cyrus? ‘Dragon’”
By Simon Perry

Demi Lovato may have recently split with Trace Cyrus, but she finds time to chat to her best friend – his sister, Miley – every day.

And what does the 16-year-old call Miley in those chats? “Dragon.” She tells the September issue of Sugar magazine (her first cover shoot in the U.K.) the nickname comes from “our fave film, Step Brothers.” She adds the megastar has “given me so much advice” to help her cope with fame.

“Recently she sent me this four-page text message encouraging me and telling me she has faith in me. It was so inspiring and made me feel great – because I do get a bit overwhelmed by the paps sometimes.”

As for her other celebrity pals, the Jonas Brothers, Lovato says, “Everyone asks me if I fancy them but I totally don’t!”

She can afford a joke now about the attention she gets, but it wasn’t so easy a few years ago. She says the bullying she endured at school stemmed from her new-found fame. “I opened a show for JoJo once and the next day my class passed round a petition to ‘Get Demi Out,’ and then handed it to me. It was pretty devastating.

“But the final straw was when I was chased into the toilets by girls threatening to punch me. I was so scared I called Mum – we decided I’d stay at home after that. But it made me more focused on writing my music and spurred me on to want success.”

She has been home-schooled since then, but she adds that she would like to go to college one day.

Lovato’s first steps on the road to fame were at a school talent show when she sang Celine Dion’s My Heart Will Go On from Titanic. “[It was] a pretty daring choice, I’m sure you’ll agree! Mum still describes that performance as ‘sweet’ – so I’m pretty sure she means I was awful!”

She still gets plenty of support from her family. “I get really emotional every time I have to leave them to go on tour, but luckily Mum and Dad take it in turns to go with me. I miss my sisters so much.”

Demi Lovato recently rocked the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles. It was a GREAT show and before she took the stage she answered a few questions about herself that you have been DYING to know. For example, did you know that even though she loves fashion she barely has time to go shopping anymore? “I don’t really have time to go shopping – at ALL,” she laughed, “If I do, it’s, like, fun for me.” Wow! Can you imagine NOT having time to shop?! She also had an AWESOME exclusive acoustic performance that was caught on video. Check it out ABOVE and let us know how you like it!

“The last two years have been insane,” said Demi Lovato during her show, which filled the lower bowl and main floor of Allstate Arena with screaming tweens on Friday. “This past year especially,” she added.

As a relative newcomer to the Disney circuit, it has been quite a year for 16-year-old Lovato. She starred in the Disney Channel movie “Camp Rock” alongside the Jonas Brothers, and she opened their tour. Now she is the star of the Disney TV series “Sonny With A Chance” and the Disney Channel movie “Princess Protection Program.” Last year, her first album, “Don’t Forget,” debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart. Billboard is predicting her new album, “Here We Go Again,” will bow near the top of the chart this week. She recently appeared as a guest on “The View” and “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.” Judging from the fan reaction at Allstate, it’s safe to say she’s poised to be Disney’s next breakout star.

Performing live, she showed her music isn’t cut from the same Disney cloth as her peers — she’s a little more rocking and has a versatile voice. A few songs from her new album show promise that she could cross out of the tween world and reach a broader audience; unfortunately, she avoided most of those songs. Occasionally donning a guitar and taking turns behind a baby grand piano, Lovato concentrated on her early, mostly forgettable material, though fans enjoyed it. An “aww” moment came when she invited a young fan onstage to sing “This Is Me” from “Camp Rock.”

While the best of her new material (including “Catch Me,” the only song for which she received sole writing credit) was strangely absent from the performance, the sprinkling of new songs she tested were the most dynamic of the set. The anthemic, catchy “Here We Go Again” was best of show, and “Remember December” demonstrated her rock singing chops.

Lovato certainly has talent. It would be interesting to see her paired with the right songwriters and outside of the Disney umbrella. Right now, however, there’s still too much pap.
